Cambodia has a rich cultural and artistic past, mostly in stone and wood carving, painting, silk weaving, ceramic, music and dance. Cambodian culture has been influenced and inspired by India, China, Thaïland and also by a combination of different religions: Hinduism, Buddhism and native animastic beliefs.
The most important period for the cultural development of Cambodia was during the Khmer empire, between 9th and 15th centuries in North of Cambodia. Artisan during these periods have been strongly influenced by India and Hinduism.
Nevertheless from 1975 to 1979, under Khmer Rouge regime, most of the artists of the country have been killed and lots of pieces of art have been destroyed. An important part of the culturage heritage has disappeared and many Cambodian, the government and international organization are now actively acting to restore cultural place and promote traditional art.
