Fruit basket
Handwoven fruit basket in straw, banana bark and local fabric from Womencraft

Tanzania is a country which is welcoming and hosting lots of refugees. Over 335 000 refugees have reached Tanzania, fleeing away conflicts, violence, and instability from Burundi, Rwanda and DR Congo.

WomenCraft, created in 2007, is a social community-driven business who are proposing Fair trade handicraft interior design products from Tanzania. WomenCraft is generating economic opportunities in gathering the rural women and their arts together. Thanks to their actions, tensions in camps have been reduced and communities have become stronger and more unified.

Weaving traditions in Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda are passed down from generation to generation.
All the weaving material (papyrus, star grass) are harvested in the camps. Additional colors are coming from recycle grain bags, banana bark, and local fabrics. Every object is asking some days of work. For example the table mats take 1 to 3 days of weaving and fruit bowl, 2 to 8 days.
