Interview of Pakistan artisan

How did you start your career as artisan? Was it a passion or a dream to become artisan when you were a child?
I started this career in early 90’s. It was my passion. Everything that reflected our individuality being Sindhi made me inclined towards this profession.

Is it a family profession from generation to generation?
Yes, it is my family business. My uncle is the pioneer of our Handicrafts business.

Could you describe a typical day at work?
I reach the shop usually at 11 am. Before I reach there, shop is opened by my Assistants. First, we display suits or other stuff in show case. Than our busy day starts. I deal with customers personally, judge their need or requirements and consult them to buy desired product. Day passes in dealing and managing things on weekends I shop to get best in the market. I find traditional and contemporary products. At 11 pm or 12 depending on customers. I close the shop.

Which skills do you need to develop to execute this job?
You need to be good at communication. And managerial skills are required too.

How much creativity is important in your work?
Creativity is the sum of our profession. New ideas mixed with all culture infuse life to our work.

What are the tools you use to create these products?
To enhance them we use complex graphics.

How does the new technologies and niche impact your work?
New technologies have no doubt substituted traditional way of work. But creativity based on traditional masterpieces, still have no match.

What part of your job makes every day different and interesting?
Dealing with different customers makes my job interesting. You meet different people and get different point of view and ideas that gives us motivation to adapt changes.

What is the best memory in your artisan work life?
In most memorable day at my shop when people from US Embassy stopped and admired my products.

What is the biggest challenge?
Change! Every year something new is demanded by customers. Culture and Innovation. Combination should be deep involved in heritage

How does your work have an impact on Sustainability?
As we focus on Socio-cultural combination, it has to go long way with sustainability. The ratio seems 100 on 100.

How do your products reflect the culture of your products?
Each and every product reflects culture of Indus Valley Civilization. The most ancient civilization of the world.
